Palmer Luckey Argues That Every Country Needs a “Warrior Class” Excited to Enact Violence on Others in Pursuit of Good Aims

Anduril Founder Palmer Luckey Unveils Company’s AI-Powered Defense Tech

On Tuesday afternoon, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey took the stage at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. He was joined by university president Jim Gash for an hour-long conversation that touched on a range of topics, from the company’s involvement in the war in Ukraine to its vision for the future of defense technology.

A Three-Minute Hype Video Sets the Stage

The event began with a three-minute hype video featuring high-definition footage of drones colliding and military vehicles exploding. The dramatic introduction set the tone for the conversation that was about to unfold.

Luckey Rages Against America’s Adversaries

Luckey, who co-founded Anduril in 2017 alongside Trae Stephens, Matt Grimm, Joe Chen, and Brian Schimpf, made it clear from the outset that he has no hesitation about building weapons for the military. In fact, he believes that societies have always needed a warrior class that is "enthused and excited" about enacting violence on others in pursuit of good aims.

"You need people like me who are sick in that way and who don’t lose any sleep making tools of violence in order to preserve freedom," Luckey told Gash. This sentiment was a stark contrast to the more measured tone often adopted by tech leaders, but it highlights the intense passion and conviction that drives Luckey’s work.

Anduril’s Involvement in Ukraine

Luckey walked Gash through the early hours of the war in Ukraine and explained why he believes Anduril could have made a big impact. He revealed that he first met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in 2019, after Zelenskyy had read about Anduril in a Wired article.

Luckey claimed that Ukraine approached Anduril to acquire some of its border control technology, but the State Department was not supportive at the time. However, Luckey pointed out that if Anduril had been able to provide real-time intelligence with targeting-grade tracks of all of Russia’s most critical weapons systems to Ukraine days before their air force was eliminated, it could have made a significant difference.

The Development of Autonomous Weapons

Luckey also spoke about the development of completely autonomous weapons, which is an area that has sparked controversy in recent years. He insisted that there is currently a "shadow campaign being waged in the United Nations" by Western countries’ adversaries to trick them into not pursuing AI aggressively.

Luckey used a thought-provoking analogy to illustrate his point: "Where’s the moral high ground in a landmine that can’t tell the difference between a school bus full of kids and a Russian tank?" This argument highlights the complexities surrounding autonomous weapons development, but Luckey believes it is necessary for defending Western countries’ interests.

Anduril’s AI Platform, Lattice

Luckey emphasized the importance of Anduril’s AI platform, Lattice, which powers its products. He called for unfettered AI development and expressed concern that many Silicon Valley founders are not doing enough to support this endeavor.

"It’s time for us to step up and do our part in advancing the field," Luckey said. "We can’t just sit back and wait for someone else to solve these problems."

The Future of Defense Technology

In conclusion, Luckey outlined Anduril’s vision for the future of defense technology. He highlighted the company’s commitment to innovation and its focus on developing cutting-edge solutions that will help protect Western countries’ interests.

"We’re not just building tools for war; we’re building tools for peace," Luckey said. "We believe that by working together, we can create a more secure world for everyone."

The conversation with Gash provided valuable insights into Anduril’s mission and values. It also highlighted the complex issues surrounding autonomous weapons development and the importance of AI in modern warfare.
