# Lyft Will Credit NYC Riders for Congestion Fees Throughout January
New York City’s congestion pricing program, which was initially set to begin on Sunday (January 4, 2025), has been paused by Governor Kathy Hochul in June. The program, designed to reduce traffic congestion in lower Manhattan while raising funds for mass transit infrastructure, was later reinstated but with adjusted pricing.
## Different Price Points for Vehicles
The congestion fee varies based on the type of vehicle and time of day:
- **Regular Cars**: During daytime hours (7 AM to 9 AM), a regular car will cost $9 to travel within Manhattan below 60th Street.
- **Ride-Sharing Services**: Passengers using ride-hailing services like Uber or Lyft will only pay $1.50 per ride for the same route and time.
## How Lyft is Handling the Fees
In response to the new congestion fee, which comes on top of an existing $2.75 fee for rides that begin, end, or pass through Manhattan below 96th Street, Lyft has announced a credit program. Riders will be credited throughout the month of January with discounts that can be applied toward future rides on the platform or toward a subscription to Citi Bike.
Lyft emphasized that this credit is intended as a "small gesture" to help riders adapt to the new pricing structure while also addressing the increased cost of rides. The company acknowledged that the congestion fee represents an additional expense, but stressed efforts to reduce overall ride costs for passengers.
## Background on the Congestion Pricing Program
The congestion pricing initiative was initially implemented in 2013 and was suspended multiple times due to financial challenges. It was most recently reinstated in July 2023 with reduced fees for both private vehicles and rideshare services. The revised pricing structure reflects a balance between reducing traffic congestion and addressing the financial burden on riders.
